65th Anniversary: Colne & District Writers Circle

Congratulations to Colne & District Writers Circle on their 65th Anniversary!

Their annual anniversary event was held at Colne Library on Sat 28th Sep 2019.  There were competitions for various categories including poems & short stories.  Judges included Karen Shaw (Loop Publishing), Geoff Crambie (local historian and Freeman of Colne) and Mark Bateman (Colne Bookshop).

Both Geoff Crambie and the Mayor of Pendle, Councillor Ken Hartley, delivered words of support and a short speech before the Judges announced the competition winners.  There were the usual refreshments, including a 65 year anniversary cake that was baked by one of the members.  Members and guests read our short stories and poems … quite interesting with some very local themes.

“Reaching a 65th Anniversary is an outstanding achievement for any club or organisation. We’ll be here as long as there is cake!”

Northern Life, Colne Life, Sweets, Tea & Biscuits
Karen also presented the group with a free goody bag which contained two editions of Northern Life, the current Colne Life magazine, two teabags of Lancashire Tea, a bag of Haribo’s and a ginger biscuit from Farmhouse Biscuits!  For those that don’t know, Karen is owner of local publishing company Loop Publishing. Amongst their many publications are the free ‘Colne Life’ magazine and their flagship publication, ‘Northern Life‘.

We recently published a story on the 10th Anniversary of Colne Life in which we stated that it was almost impossible to corner Karen for a meeting or a photo. Well, we managed it today! Here she is along with her partner, Chris, and one of her daughters, Martha . Over three days, we’ve spotted more of their involvement in community life. On Sunday, they were at the Festival of the Spirit at Colne Muni and her elder daughter, Ruby, was dancing as part of a set of performances by the Pendle Academy of Dance.  On Monday, Karen invited us join her at the Muni for the press meeting for the Aladdin pantomime.
